REVIEW: Slingshot Soundtrack 2011

Strike the Rock Entertainment brings us a compilation of gospel sure to catch your ear and fill your soul. The Slingshot Gospel compilation is a collection of talented independent artists that love music and have a great Love for the Lord. Founded by Michelle Lang, The Slingshot All City Youth Conference is held in Seattle and birthed this musical work proving the fact that God can and will be worshipped through all forms of music. If the compilation is a sign of what takes place at this Youth Conference then I’m sure Seattle is filled with the spirit during this event. Various musical talents are used to honor God completed with variety and a passionate love for art.

All Good – Angie Shield opens this great song with the perspective “Wandering, waiting for direction. Feel so close but there’s no connection.” Knowing that all sinners have been there she goes in on the chorus to boldly state. “ I’m Strong, can’t nobody tear me down No Fear cause he never gave me the spirit of it I’m bold - cause I believe in his word It’s all good.” The R&B flavor delivered in the track gives a hard hitting beat leaving gaps for Shields message of “God is always there:” to be hear more clearly by the listener.

Say It Loud - Michelle Lang writes bold lyrics while Bria Manaway and Sharron Davis provide the commanding voices to bring the message that the message of God’s Love is not lost but just coming through in a different platform. This club inspired beat is fast paced but is covered by the lyrics of the new generation still standing tall for the Lord.

IGod – The spoken word from Tia Nache will have you think twice before you choose your next form of communication. The poetess runs down several forms of social media and express her opinion of how technology is beneficial but will not substitute the personal communication between people when they gathered together..

I’m A Witness – Michelle Lang hits us with a pop sound as she witnesses her love and total admiration for God. It’s clear to hear the vocal strength in Lang’s voice as she belts out high notes with power. This radio friendly song is sure to be a hit with young Christians.

Like Him – Another pop radio sound is delivered with the production by Benji Demps. Brandy Nordgen belts out a few notes that let you know her vocal ability as she sings of trying to blend in with the crowd but being different due to her yearning to be more like Christ.

More of You - One of my Fav’s on this compilation. Zach Bruce sings from the heart and shows that when times get hard he knows who to reach pout to for help. Lyrics like “I’m only human but I try to be more like you but when I mess up it only proves I need more of you.” sums up the theme that we all can relate to. The harmony and r&b sound makes this a head nodding radio friendly tune for all to enjoy.

There is Hope – The compilation switches up musical styles but still delivers a powerful gospel with a Country/pop gospel flavor. The heavy guitar riffs accompany Mark Wagner as he lets sinners know that no matter what you’ve gone through there is hope and you can be washed and cleansed from all your sins. As simple as he track comes across, its’ lyrics are powerful and will move you to want to know the Lord more personally.

Only You – Rapper Willie Will spits the good news out on this hip hop track while Zach Bruce lays down a smooth r&b chorus to complete the song. The piano chords during the verse brings a dramatic persona to Will‘s flow.

What If – Morrissa Nichole asks a very powerful question that everyone who hears will ponder once hearing this song. “What is we are the only Jesus people see?” The piano played by Nichole seems to compliment every single word played as we are challenged to be a better person to each and every person we come in contact with throughout our daily walk.

Winner - Hip hop artist ‘Big Al’ delivers determination pours out confidence in each line as he holds his head high declaring his love for God. Winner is a definite confidence builder for those suffering from insecurities. Al assures you that Gods Love will help you through the rough times. G.W.

  1. Thank you for the review and commentary. We certainly appreciate you taking out the time to REALLY listen to the work. :)

*A couple of corrections to the credits: "More of You" is performed by newcomer Kalieb Nash and the backgrounds vocals on "Only You" were done by veteran vocalist William Demps! Reel Music (Zach Bruce, Benji Demps and Jeremy Dawson) is the production team responsible for bringing the project to life. Thanks again!
